Our Approach
Straughan provides statewide illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE) support for MDOT SHA’s MS4 Phase I permit. As a subconsultant to KCI Technologies, we have performed outfall screening and sampling at more than 175 sites annually, helping identify and trace sources of illicit discharge. Our role includes storm drain inventory, chemical sampling for pollutants such as phenols, chlorine, detergents, and copper, and data entry into SHA’s IDDE database.
We coordinate closely with KCI to prepare field missions, perform rapid site evaluations following dry-weather events, and notify the team immediately if an illicit discharge is suspected. Our efficient workflow and responsiveness have enabled early completion of field efforts and high-quality deliverables that support regulatory compliance and improved water quality across Maryland’s transportation network.
